Sheepskin Tanning Workshop: May 8-10
Join Instructor Callan Burton-Shore to learn how to naturally tan a sheepskin using the traditional smoke-tanning method. Over the course of 3-days, each student will tan their own sheepskin using a few tools, eggs, wood smoke and their own hands! The skills covered in this class also apply to many other kinds of animal hides and types of tanning, so this is a great class to take no matter how much experience you have.
Location:
We will come together on a beautiful piece of land in Weaverville, North Carolina (traditional Cherokee land). The land is owned by my dear friends Tyler + Allie and is home to a couple families, a few pet bunnies, and lots of spicebush and tulip poplar!
Primitive camping for $15/ night is available as a separate add-on. You will receive the details to book your accommodations via email after you sign up. There are also two simple indoor spaces that will be available to book at an additional cost. All accommodation fees will be paid directly to the land owners. Asheville and Weaverville have many Airbnbs and hotels as well, if you would rather not stay on sight.
Important Notes:
Food will not be provided as a part of this class. Whether or not you are camping, you will need to bring your own food for every meal. More details on our primitive kitchen set up will be shared via email after signing up. There are many grocery stores and restaurants within in close driving distance
This is a physically demanding class. You will be standing and using your arms A LOT. As an instructor, I love finding creative ways to accommodate people’s differing bodies and abilities; please just reach out before signing up if you have questions about your ability to take this class.
Payment/ Scholarships
BIPOC scholarships are available as a separate ticket on the workshops page.
For sliding scale and work-trade options please email Callan: callanshore@gmail.com
