Sheepskin Tanning Workshop: Nov. 13-15 (Saxapahaw, NC)

Join Instructor Callan Burton-Shore to learn how to naturally tan a sheepskin using a combination of the traditional bark-tanning and fat-tanning (brain-tanning) methods. Over the course of 3-days, each student will tan their own sheepskin using a few tools, tree bark, eggs, and their own hands! The skills covered in this class also apply to many other kinds of animal hides and types of tanning, so this is a great class to take no matter how much experience you have.
What you’ll learn:
What is hide tanning
History + various cultural traditions of tanning in North America and beyond
How to source + store hides
How to remove flesh and membrane from a hide
How to find tannins in your area
How to make a tannic solution with tree bark or leaves
How to egg/ dress a sheepskin with emulsified oil
How to soften a sheepskin in a frame
The difference between smoke-tanning + bark-tanning
The difference between fur-on pelts, leather, rawhide, and buckskin
Basic hide sewing techniques
How to start and tend fire
Much more!
Location + Accommodations:
We will come together on a beautiful piece of land called Benzai Bloomstead in Saxapahaw North Carolina. Camping is encouraged and is included in the workshop price, but you’re more than welcome to stay at your home or rent a nearby airbnb or hotel room. You will have access to many beautiful campsites, a well-made outhouse, outdoor shower, covered outdoor seating area as well as access to a shared indoor shower, bathroom, and kitchen if needed.
Important Note:
This is a physically demanding class. You will be standing and using your arms A LOT. As an instructor, I love finding creative ways to accommodate people’s differing bodies and abilities; please just reach out before signing up if you have questions about your ability to take this class.
