Buckskin Tanning Workshop: Oct 2nd-4th (Schuyler VA)
Early bird pricing ends July 1st!
Over the course of this three day class (Friday-Sunday), you will learn how to turn a raw deer hide into buckskin using a natural tanning method called combo-tanning. Combo-tanning involves aspects of both traditional fat-tanning (brain-tanning) and bark-tanning and thus is a great jumping-off point for all types of tanning! Buckskin is a soft, but strong, suede-like material and is perfect for garments, bags, shoes, and more. You will leave class with your own finished buckskin and the knowledge and resources to make more.
We will gather along the Rockfish River in beautiful Schuyler Virginia (30 minutes from Charlottesville). We will set up camp next to the river and will take breaks throughout the weekend to play, swim, cook, lounge on the floating dock, and just hang out together!

Camping:
Camping is included in the workshop price. This is a primitive camping situation! There will be a simple primitive kitchen at our class site (Propane camp stove, fire to cook on, tables) and an indoor fridge and bathroom up the hill if needed. There is an outhouse, the river to bathe in, and clean drinking water. If you do not want to camp and are not local, you are welcome to rent a nearby Airbnb or hotel.
Important Notes:
Food will not be provided as a part of this class. Whether or not you are camping, you will need to bring your own food. More details on our primitive kitchen set up will be shared via email after signing up. We may share meals and collaborate on cooking, but there will be no formal meal planning or food provided.
This is a physically demanding class. You will be standing and using your arms A LOT. As an instructor, I love finding creative ways to accommodate people’s differing bodies and abilities; please just reach out before signing up if you have questions about your ability to take this class.
Payment/ Scholarships
BIPOC scholarships are available as a separate ticket on the workshops page.
