Buckskin Sewing Workshop: Sat. March 28th

$150.00

Learn to sew with buckskin and make your own pouch!

Buckskin is one of the strongest and most versatile materials out there, and it’s all natural! Over the course of a day you will cut out and sew a simple pouch as well as the buckskin “lacing” you’ll use to sew it. This class is a great foundation for anyone who wants to explore bigger buckskin projects in the future, such as clothes or shoes. We will use buckskin tanned by instructor Callan Burton-Shore. All tools and enough buckskin to make a small, simple pouch will be provided. Antler buttons and tools to take home will be available at an extra cost.

What You’ll learn

  • How to read a hide

    • Where are the thick vs. thin areas?

    • How did the hide move while on the deer?

    • How will the hide stretch as it is used?

  • How to make a pattern for a simple pouch

  • What tools you will need to sew with buckskin

  • How to make your own thread or “lacing” out of buckskin

  • A few basic stitches

  • How to add gussets and welts to your pouch

Location:

This class will be held in Weaverville, North Carolina; 30 mins outside of Asheville. We will be outside unless it is too cold or rainy, in which case we will be in a small space with a wood stove.
