Bowdrill 101 Class: May 31
Want to learn the ancient skill of making fire with sticks? Join instructor Callan Shore for an introduction to bowdrill class!
May 31 from 11am-4pm Barnardsville, North Carolina
Most of our ancestors used friction fire in order to survive and there remain people around the world who rely on this skill daily. Not only is bowdrill a survival skill, but it is also an incredibly meaningful way to connect with yourself, your local ecosystem, and the element of fire.
In this class we will cover multiple methods of making fire with a bowdrill kit. After demos and an overview of the skill, you will have the opportunity to practice bowdrill yourself and hopefully make a coal! We will provide bowdrill kits and tinder bundles to practice with during class.
This class is for anyone and everyone. Whether you just learned about bowdrill or you’ve been practicing it for years, you will surely get something out of this class. This class is designed to feel welcoming and calm; there will be no pressure to make a coal, but we will give you the knowledge and materials to give you the best chance of doing so.
We will gather in the meadow at Dancing Springs Farm in Barnardsville, NC (about 30 mins from Asheville). If it is raining, we will still be outside, but under a tarp! There will be an hour break for lunch.
You will learn
Two different forms/ methods for making fire with bowdrill (one of which is not commonly known but is a game-changer!)
Basic Knife Skills: You will learn how to safely make and prep a bowdrill kit using a knife and saw
How to make a tinder bundle with various different wild plants (used to blow your coal to flame)
What types of wood to use for your kit and other fire allies in the plant community
How to build a fire structure (for after you’ve made a coal)
The importance of nervous system regulation in making fire!
Tips for making fire in the rain
And lot’s more!
Callan first learned bowdrill at 7 years old and immediately felt connected to the skill. She has been teaching friction fire to kids and adults throughout the southeast for the last 4 years.
As a young adult, Callan re-discovered the skill while taking part in a program called Deep Remembering with teacher Luke Mclaughlin. Part of her journey of re-learning this skill was realizing that regulating her nervous system (I.e. taking deep breaths, slowing down, & taking breaks) was crucial to making a coal and enjoying bowdrill! She feels that awareness of the inner realm is just as important in learning new skills as are the physical elements.
