This pouch was sewn by hand using naturally tanned buckskin (deer leather) and iguana leather.
The design on the back of the pouch was inspired by the Anasazi hand prints that can be seen on walls throughout the Grand Canyon. This pouch was also sewn by hand entirely while inside the canyon (on the colorado river) this year.
About the hides used:
Iguanas are an “invasive” species in southern Florida and thus are constantly being exterminated. The iguana hide used in this pouch was sourced from an iguana removal company that would have otherwise thrown it away.
The deer hides used to make the buckskin in this pouch have a similar story. Hunters bring their deer to meat processors during hunting season and most often don’t want the hide back. We are able to then pick up these hides for tanning; keeping them out of the landfill.
